You’ve started your natural hair journey a couple years ago and you have noticed that at first, your hair was growing rapidly but now it has stopped?
Are you stuck at shoulder length hair and cannot get past that stage?
Unfortunately, that happens to a lot of us naturals and the reasons why this is happening can easily be fixed so that you can move past that dangerous “shoulder lean” stage.
In this post, I’m going to share with you 10 reasons why your natural hair is not growing and what you can change to get your hair growing again!
The crazy part is these problems are so simple that they are so easily looked over.
Using these tips, I was able to turn my hair
Let’s get started!
1) You aren’t detangling properly
The longer your hair grows the more prone it is to unnecessary breakage.
One of the biggest causes of breakage is not properly detangling your hair.
So, let’s break this down…
In order for your hair to grow longer you need to be retaining length.
Which means your ends need to be protected?
Constant breakage towards your ends will lead to your hair not retaining length.
No length retention, no longer hair.
It is CRUCIAL to be extremely gentle when detangling your hair
Especially when your hair is in its natural state as it is more sensitive to breakage.
Things to know about detangling:
- Make sure your hair is saturated with water (do not let it dry out)
- Use conditioner with a lot of slip
- Be EXTREMELY GENTLE!
- detangle before your wash with a pre-poo
- Use aloe vera (if not allergic)
- Start from the ends to the roots
- Double detangle Start by finger detangling then
- Use a wide tooth comb or a Denman brush to detangle
You probably know what a den man brush is but if you do not then here is a picture:
Denman brushes are fantastic for detangling as the bristles are super soft and do not cause unnecessary breakage to the hair when used with detangler or conditioner.
Also follow up with a Denman brush after you have finger detangled.
Adding the Denman brush alone will help to significantly reduce your breakage when detangling your hair.
Check out the Denman brush below and read the reviews for yourself and determine if this would be helpful for you. It is for me! #ad
2) Your Hair is too DRY
I’ll try not to be repetitive as a lot of these things go together but when your hair is dry, especially natural hair, it causes so much breakage.
As I mentioned before, if there is no length retention there is no longer hair or “hair growth”
Natural hair is one of the driest textures as it does not produce as much oil as straighter hair textures.
The strands in natural are thicker than the other hair types which causes natural hair to be thirsty for moisture.
If you do not provide the moisture to keep the strands hydrated, the hair will start to break and split at the ends.
This dramatically interferes with length retention which can make you feel like your hair is not growing even when it is.
How to solve this?
- Invest in a good deep conditioner and try to deep conditioner every 1-2 weeks
- Moisturize your hair on a daily basis with water
- Every couple of days reapply your moisturizing procedure (LCO,LOC)
- Avoid products with too many sulphates, parabens, alcohols, etc.
3) You’re not trimming your hair
I understand that with natural hair we do not want to apply heat all the time to check our ends. I agree.
However, by skipping the trimming of your ends you are doing more harm than good!
As we discussed, your ends are the determining factor in whether or not your hair will retain length and grow longer.
This is why many feel that their hair isn’t growing.
As much as we like the length with those split ends, they are not your best friend
Here’s why split ends are bad.
As the ends split, they will travel up to the root of your hair and will then lead to those strands being damaged at the root.
This will lead to:
- Thinner hair
- Harder time detangling
- Uneven hair
- Tons of breakage
It’s best to get those hairs out the way as soon as possible to avoid any unnecessary damage.
4) Too Much Buildup
Healthy hair starts at the root and if you are not clarifying your hair, you are in for some serious problems.
Not only will it build up and stop your natural hair from growing.
It can cause scalp problems like dandruff and scalp irritation.
But more importantly, hair cannot grow in clogged pores.
The more buildup that you have the more difficult it is for the hair to grow due to the hair follicles being blocked by the obsessive amount of buildup.
How to solve this?
- Start using clarifying shampoos at least 2 times a monthThis will help to reduce the amount of product, dead skin, etc. on the hair to keep the scalp clean
- Detox the hair once a month with the Aztec Bentonite Clay MaskThe clay helps to detoxify while the apple cider vinegar helps to cleanse
If you do not know what the Aztec Bentonite Clay Mask, it is this here:
I personally use this, and it is amazing for cleaning the hair and getting rid of any chemical and product build up.
Plus, it has this pulsating feeling on the scalp that just feels divine!
Check out these reviews and try it for yourself. The best part about this product is that it is only $15! #ad
5) You’re not massaging your scalp
One of the best methods to stimulate hair growth is a simple scalp massage.
It is fantastic for stimulating blood flow which in turn is one of the main factors in hair growth.
It’s super simple to do but here’s some pointers I would add!
Use oils such as peppermint, tea tree and rosemary in your scalp massage.
These oils all serve amazing purposes when it comes to scalp stimulation, cleaning, and hair growth.
Just be sure to only add a few drops of these oils into a carrier oil (coconut, olive, JBCO, etc.) as undiluted essential oils can cause unwanted scalp and skin irritation.
My favorite kit is the Lagunamoon Essential Oils Gift Set, 6 Pcs Pure Essential Oils (Lavender, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Orange, Peppermint, Tea Tree) I ordered from Amazon, and I love it because it is:
- Super strong in scent
- Multiple options of scents to choose from
- Inexpensive (under $10)
- Long lasting
- Many uses
I’ve actually spoken about these essential oils on my blog before, so these are not new around here!
This kit is really amazing and its super cheap, but you will love the scents of them.
This kit does not include the rosemary essential oil, but the peppermint and tea tree oils are great as well!
6) You’re lacking protein
Hair is dead protein and in other words “keratin”
When we do not have enough protein in our hair, it tends to lead to more fragile hair resulting in more breakage and split ends.
The more breakage you have, the less length retention happens.
This is one of the main reasons why your hair is not growing.
However, be aware, there is such a thing as protein overdosing.
Essentially, protein overdosing is using too much protein in your hair.
This can lead to some serious problems with your hair such as webbing, breakage and your hair may even start falling out.
So please, please be careful!
How should I use it then?
It is recommended to do a protein treatment every 6-8 weeks or on an as needed basis.
Make sure to always follow up your protein treatments with a deep conditioner.
Here’s some of the best protein treatments for natural hair:
