Two mistakes causing your oily skin

Oily skin is a common problem for many people.

Super shiny, clogged pores, blackheads, etc. are all common when dealing with oily skin.

To be very honest, it’s annoying always looking like a glazed ham or that you’ve been playing basketball for 5 hours.

If you do not know, I have worked in cosmetics for over 5 years.

This includes 4 years as a Sephora employee and 1 Year at Nordstrom.

So, with that being said, in this blog post I will be sharing the top tips I learned in cosmetics to drastically and quickly improve your oily skin!

Be sure to get my free checklist while you’re here!

It will help you build the foundation for a skincare routine that will help guide you to the proper routine.

More importantly what’s best for your skin type!

1) Start Hydrating Your Skin, Properly

Woah! Shocker huh?

What if I told you that oily skin is a common indicator that your skin is actually dry?

That was one of the biggest shocks I learned about skincare during corporate training at Sephora.

Basically, this is what is happening:

Your skin is too dry and is creating its own oils to help hydrate.

The solution? Hydrate your oily skin properly.

HOW DO I HYDRATE?

The best way to hydrate oily skin is to use water based, gel moisturizers

Do not use rich creams or oil-based moisturizers to hydrate!

Those are wayyy to thick for oily skin and do not moisturize it properly.

Instead, you should use thinner, water-based moisturizers that will penetrate better to help reduce the oil.

HOW DO I CHOSE A MOISTURIZER?

These are things you should be looking for:

  • Texture: The thinner the better when it comes to moisturizers. Do not get thicker moisturizers as they tend to add excess shine and oil.
  • Ingredients: Water is important! Look at the ingredient list and water should be at the top of the list.
    • Do not use moisturizers that contain heavy oils in them.
  • Keywords: Look for words like “water based”, “gel”, “mattifying”, “non-comedogenic.”

Now, here are two suggestions of great moisturizers you need to try. (I have personally tried both and loved them!)

2) You’re Not Deep Cleaning

When it comes to cleansing oily skin, it is not super complicated but there are some key aspects you should be including in your routine.

Your cleansing routine should be deep cleaning your pores to reduce the amount of sebum (oil).

With that being said, you should be including a weekly mask that you use 2-3X a week to keep your pores clear.

The clearer your pores, the less blackheads and sebum are produced that make your oily skin troublesome.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR?

You should be looking for ingredients such as:

  • Tea Tree
  • Clay
  • Charcoal
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Retinol
  • AHAs/BHAs

These ingredients are super helpful because they are:

  • Deep cleaning
  • Keep the pores unclogged
  • Exfoliating (AHA/BHA, RETINOL)

Which are all amazing things that drastically improve the texture, appearance and health of your oily skin.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PRODUCTS TO GET?

For cleansers, I typically recommend a “gentle” cleanser.

Avoid cleansers that strip the skin of moisture, this will result in MORE oil on your skin to compensate for the dryness!

Gentle cleansers will still help to get rid of any excess oil or shine without unnecessary stripping.

The best cleanser for this is:

I know that these are two simple things but, skincare should be simple!

Honesty, as someone who worked in cosmetics for over 5 years, I always noticed that these were the two biggest issues when it came to people with oily skin.

Many times, people with oily skin try their hardest to dry the skin and use the wrong kinds of products which lead to MORE sebum/oil production!

Fixing these two issues will seriously lead to less oil and more of a radiant glow.
